FIVE-YEAR OUTCOMES OF ENDOVENOUS CYANOACRYLATE GLUE ABLATION FOR LOWER LIMB VARICOSE VEINS AT FRIENDSHIP HOSPITAL

Abstract

Objectives: To describe clinical and duplex ultrasound characteristics and evaluate the outcomes of endovenous cyanoacrylate glue ablation for chronic lower extremity venous insufficiency at Friendship Hospital. 

Subjects and methods: A descriptive, retrospective combined with prospective longitudinal study was conducted on 53 patients (85 limbs) diagnosed with chronic great saphenous vein insufficiency who underwent cyanoacrylate glue ablation (Venaseal) from March 2019 to March 2024. Patients were followed up at 1 month and 6 months post-intervention. 

Results: The mean age was 68.3 ± 12.1 years; females accounted for 52.8%. The most common symptom was leg heaviness/pain (95.3%). CEAP clinical classes were primarily C2 (50.6%) and C3 (45.9%). The mean VCSS score decreased significantly from 7.9 pre-operatively to 2.2 at 1 month and 1.6 at 6 months (p < 0.001). The complete vein closure rate was 100%. The main complication was a mild phlebitis-like abnormal reaction (PLAR) in 10.6%. No major complications were recorded. 

Conclusion: Endovenous cyanoacrylate glue ablation is a safe and highly effective method, leading to rapid improvement in clinical symptoms for patients with chronic venous insufficiency.
