Background: Among the methods of labor induction, Foley catheterization in the cervical
canal is a simple, low-cost method that is widely applied in large hospitals in Vietnam.
Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness and some factors related to labor induction by Foley
catheter placed in the cervical canal in pregnancy over 22 weeks.
Methods: Retrospective and prospective cross-sectional description of 82 women with
indications for termination of pregnancy, gestational age from 22 weeks or more at Nghe An
Obstetrics and Children's Hospital from December 2021 to October 2022.
Results: Labor induction success rate: level 1 success was 93.9%: level 2 success was 80.5%
and actual success was 73.1%. Bishop after pumping the ball increased an average of 3.5 ± 1.5
points. No serious side effects have been reported following Foley administration. The rate of
successful induction of labor was not affected by age group, number of births, history of cesarean
section. The higher the Bishop before placing the Foley sonde, the higher the success rate.
Conclusions: Sonde Foley is highly effective in induction of labor, with very few side effects.
