Objective: Identification of Candida spp. prevalence in blood cultures and associated factors at Tra Vinh General Hospital, 2025.
Subjects and methods: All blood samples submitted for blood culture at the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology, Tra Vinh General Hospital. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted from August 2025 to October 2025.
Results: Out of a total of 247 subjects, blood cultures on Sabouraud Dextrose Chloramphenicol Agar yielded 35 positive cases of Candida spp., resulting in an infection rate of 14.2%. The isolated species included Candida albicans (42.9%), Candida glabrata (25.7%), Candida tropicalis (8.6%), Candida krusei (5.7%), and other Candida spp. (17.1%). The findings indicated that the prevalence of Candida spp. infection was significantly associated with diabetes mellitus (PR = 2.59; 95% CI: 1.27 – 5.29; p < 0.05).
Conclusion: The prevalence of Candida spp. in blood culture samples among the study population was 14.2%, with a diverse distribution of species, in which Candida albicans remained the predominant pathogen. The study also documented a higher prevalence of Candida spp. infection among individuals with diabetes mellitus compared with those without diabetes.
