Objective: (1) To describe the clinical characteristics of patients with gout at Vo Truong Toan University Hospital. (2) To describe the serum uric acid (AU) levels in patients with gout at Vo Truong Toan University Hospital.
Subject and method: A retrospective cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 133 medical records of patients who presented to the hospital and were diagnosed with gout.
Results: The predominant clinical manifestations included postprandial onset (36%), monoarticular involvement (79.7%), joint pain (100%), sudden onset (72.9%), and the first metatarsophalangeal joint as the most commonly affected site (48.1%). Severe pain based on the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) accounted for 43.6% of cases. The mean serum uric acid level was 436.6 ± 99.2 µmol/L.
Conclusion: Common clinical features among patients with gout include severe joint pain, sudden onset, and monoarticular involvement, particularly of the first metatarsophalangeal joint. Elevated serum uric acid is the characteristic laboratory abnormality. Comprehensive evaluation of clinical and laboratory features plays an essential role in the diagnosis, management, and prognosis of gout.
