Introduction: Sleep disturbance is one of the most common health problems among elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), leading to reduced quality of life and impaired glycemic control. These disorders have significant adverse effects on physical health, psychological well-being, and patients’ functional capacity.
Objective: Analysis of factors associated with sleep disorders in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at Vo Truong Toan University Hospital.
Subject and method: A descriptive cross-sectional analytical study was conducted on 157 elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who attended and received treatment at Vo Truong Toan University Hospital.
Results: The prevalence of sleep disturbance was 80.9%, mainly at a mild level (59.2%). Factors significantly associated with sleep disturbance included: age ≥ 70 years (OR = 4.4; p = 0.006), female gender (OR = 2.4; p = 0.033), being currently employed (OR = 3.3; p = 0.007), overweight or obesity (OR = 3.5; p = 0.004), duration of diabetes > 10 years (OR = 3.8; p = 0.01), and poor glycemic control (OR = 2.8; p = 0.014).
Conclusion: Sleep disturbance is highly prevalent among elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and is significantly associated with multiple anthropometric and clinical factors. Screening, counseling, and interventions to improve sleep quality should be integrated into comprehensive diabetes care for elderly patients.
