Objective: Description of Clinical Characteristics and Early Postoperative Outcomes of Patellar Fracture Treatment Using the Figure-of-Eight Tension-Band Wiring Technique at Can Tho Central General Hospital, 2021–2024.
Subject and method: A retrospective study was conducted on patients with confirmed patellar fractures who underwent surgery using the figure-of-eight tension-band wiring technique and met the inclusion criteria.
Results: Patients with patellar fractures caused by a direct trauma mechanism to the knee accounted for 82.98%. Postoperatively, most patients presented with knee swelling (95.74%), warmth (91.49%), pain (87.23%), and ecchymosis (57.45%); only 8.51% experienced low-grade fever. The surgical wounds were mostly dry and non-infected (93.62%), with only 6.38% showing mild erythema. Functionally, 85.11% of patients achieved a knee range of motion >120°, and no cases exhibited limitation <90°. According to the Bostman scoring system, functional recovery was rated as excellent in 10.64% and good in 89.36% of patients.
Conclusion: After surgery, most patients experienced only mild inflammatory responses such as swelling, pain, and warmth around the knee, with no signs of wound infection. Functional recovery of the knee was rated good to excellent, demonstrating the effectiveness of the surgical technique and appropriate postoperative care.
