Objective: Evaluation of the effectiveness of some intervention measures to slow the progression of myopia in primary school students was conducted in Quang Nam province.
Subjects and methods: Using a controlled intervention study design on 1148 primary school students from 5 primary schools in Quang Nam province: Vo Thi Sau, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Kim Dong Bac Tra My, Kim Dong Tien Phuoc and Minh Vien were enrolled (4/2023-5/2025).
Results: Results showed the increased awareness of the students about refractive errors (DID = 9.45%, p < 0.01), reduced incorrect sitting posture (from 14.68% to 0%, p < 0.01), reduced TV watching (from 57.17% to 43.52%, p < 0.01), reduced video game playing (from 19.17% to 12.09%, p < 0.01), and increased participation in housework (from 17.44% to 29.53%, p < 0.01). With regard to myopia progression, the myopia progression in the intervention group was slower than in the control group (4.03% vs. 6.90%, DID = -2.87%) with a lower average increase in myopia (0.84D vs. 1.74D, p < 0.001).
Conclusion: The myopia progression was different by grade level: the 2nd grade to 4th grade (DID = -1.04%, p < 0.05) and the 3rd grade to 5th grade (DID = -1.82%, p < 0.05).
