Objectives:To study a number of factors affecting transumbilical laparoscopic-assisted appendectomy
(TULAA) in children.
Method: An interventional descriptive prospective study with all pediatric patients diagnosed with
acute appendicitis who were indicated for TULAA at Thai Binh Pediatric Hospital, Vietnam from
January 2018 to December 2019.
Result: 300 patients with 180 males and 120 females with average age 8.8±2.6 years old (3-15).
The success rate of TULAA was 65.3% (196 patients), 104 patients have to switch to laparoscopic
surgery with 03 trocarts (accounting for 34.7%). Intraoperative evaluation of appendix showed that
82.7% of patients had normal appendix position and the abnormal position of appendix, free fluid
in the abdomen increased the rate of using additional trocar in TULAA with p< 0.001 OR(95%CI)
0.001(0-0.005).
Conclusion: TULAA is a safe surgical procedure for children with short surgery time, reduced pain
time and earlier time to start passing gas and oral intake after surgery.
