24. TUMOUR WIDE RESECTION AND MEGAPROSTHESIS TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT FOR DISTAL FEMORAL OSTEOSARCOMA: A CASE REPORT AND LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

Objective: To report a case of distal femoral osteosarcoma treated with wide tumor resection and reconstruction using a megaprosthesis total knee replacement, and to evaluate treatment outcomes after six months of follow-up.

Methods: This is a case report of a patient diagnosed with distal femoral osteosarcoma who underwent wide tumor resection and bone defect reconstruction using a megaprosthesis total knee replacement. The patient was followed up at Ho Chi Minh city Orthopaedic and Trauma Hospital from October 2024 to April 2025.

Results: The surgery was successfully performed. At the 6-month follow-up, the patient demonstrated near-complete recovery of knee range of motion (0-130 degrees), with no observable limb length discrepancy. The MSTS functional score was 28, indicating an excellent outcome. No evidence of local recurrence or distant metastasis was detected.

Conclusion: The initial result of this case demonstrates that, in addition to biological reconstruction methods, Megaprosthesis total knee replacement is also an important option in limb-salvage surgery for bone cancer. This approach provides both surgeons and patients with more treatment choices for managing this challenging disease.
