33. RESULTS OF TREATMENT OF HERPES-INDUCED PAIN BY PATIENT-CONTROLLED PAIN RELIEF

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the results of treating herpes zoster pain using patient controlled analgesia with Fentanyl.

Subjects and methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study, 68 patients diagnosed with herpes zoster pain at the National Hospital of Dermatology from January 2023 to December 2024.

Results: The study showed that patient controlled analgesia with Fentanyl helps control herpes zoster pain well in the early stages, after 3 days of treatment, the rate of mild pain was the majority with 86.8%. After the first week, only 1-2 patients showed signs of severe pain with a VAS score of 7 points or more. The effect lasted until 12 weeks. Before treatment, there were no cases with mild pain, after 12 weeks of treatment, most patients had mild pain, accounting for 82.4%. Moderate and severe pain accounted for only 17.7%. Patient controlled analgesia with fentanyl provides superior and lasting pain relief in patients with shingles. Common side effects include dizziness, nausea, and vomiting in 17.7% of patients, urinary retention in 8.8%, and a few cases of lethargy and constipation.

Conclusion: Patient controlled analgesia with Fentanyl is highly effective in patients with shingles
