44. SURVEY ON THE PREVALENCE OF ANEMIA AMONG FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS AT PHENIKAA UNIVERSITY IN 2024

Abstract

Objective: To determine the prevalence of anemia among first-year students at Phenikaa University in 2024.

Subject and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 8410 first-year students at Phenikaa University. Venous blood samples were collected from the students using EDTA-K2/K3 anticoagulants and analyzed with a Beckman Coulter DxH600 automated hematology analyzer at the Phenikaa University General Clinic.

Results and conclusion: The prevalence of anemia among first-year students at Phenikaa University was 4.74%, with a higher rate in female students (7.95%) compared to male students (0.89%). The average hemoglobin concentration among anemic students was 119.20 ± 15.675 g/L for males and 109.61 ± 9.824 g/L for females. Most cases of anemia were mild (4.45%), while moderate and severe anemia were rare (0.29% and 0.01%, respectively). The prevalence of microcytic hypochromic anemia was 2.76%.
