Objective: To investigate the clinical characteristics of patients seeking examination and treatment for GERD at University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City facility 3.
Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study using retrospective data was conducted on 192 prescriptions/non-medication orders from patients with GERD seeking examination and treatment at University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City facility 3 from January 2024 to December 2024.
Results: Female patients accounted for the majority (60.9%), and the median age of female patients with GERD was 40.0 (31.5-57.0), which was significantly higher than in males at 35.0 (29.0-48.0), p = 0.009. Most women with GERD had a normal BMI (73.5%), while men with GERD had higher rates of overweight (38.7%) and obesity (29.3%), p = 0.001. The median blood pressure of male GERD patients was 125.0 (118.0-136.0) mmHg, higher than the median blood pressure of female GERD patients at 120.0 (108.0-128.0) mmHg, p = 0.001. Most GERD patients exhibited symptoms from both traditional medicine (77.1%) and modern medicine (93.2%). Bitter taste in the mouth was more common in older adults (13.8%), while bloating, nausea, and vomiting were more common in younger patients. Gastroduodenitis was a common comorbid condition in GERD patients (24%).
Conclusion: There is a gender-based difference in age, BMI, blood pressure, and comorbidities in GERD patients, as well as a difference in GERD symptoms across age groups.
