Objective: Describe the level of adherence to care bundle of peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) and some related factors at the Pediatrics Department, Vinmec Central Park International General Hospital in 2024.
Objects and methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study, collecting data from 42 nurses, 444 PIVC insertions, and 2254 PIVC maintenance instances on 268 pediatric patients aged newborn to 16 years from June 2024 to September 2024.
Results: The adherence rate for PIVC insertion practices was 75.5%, with failure to meet the required disinfection time accounting for 2.7% and failure to document in medical records accounting for 21.8%. The adherence rate for PIVC maintenance practices was 81.7%, with failure to disinfect the connection port accounting for 8.5% and failure to flush the line correctly accounting for 18.3%. The percentage of pediatric patients receiving complication prevention care according to the standard PIVC bundle was 74.3%. Full-time nurses demonstrated a higher adherence rate for PIVC maintenance compared to part-time nurses.
Conclusion: The level of adherence to the PIVC care bundle at Vinmec Central Park International General Hospital is relatively high. Basic steps such as vein identification, skin disinfection and use of sterile instruments were performed according to standards. However, the time for disinfection, recording medical records, disinfection of ports and clearing of lines needs to be improved.
Recommendations: Training, technical supervision and record keeping systems should be strengthened, the work assignment mechanism should be reviewed and the contract framework of part-time nurses should be adjusted to improve care efficiency and prevent complications.
