Objective: Describe the clinical and paraclinical characteristics of children with acute leukemia at the Pediatric Center, Bach Mai Hospital. Evaluate the treatment results of children with acute leukemia at the Pediatric Center, Bach Mai Hospital.
Subjects and methods: Descriptive study, retrospective data collection on 30 children diagnosed with acute leukemia treated at the Pediatric Center from 2018 to 2023.
Results: The average age is 8.37 years old (from 6 months to 16 years old), male/female ratio is 1.5/1. Common symptoms at admission include fever (60%), anemia (80%), subcutaneous hemorrhage (46.6%), bone pain (53.3%), hepatomegaly (50%), splenomegaly (30%), lymphadenopathy (20%). Peripheral blood test results showed that the rate of children with reduced red blood cell count was 73.3%, reduced hemoglobin was 90%, thrombocytopenia was 80%, reduced neutrophils were 76.6%, and malignant immature cells were 60%. Bone marrow results showed that 50% of children were rich in marrow cells, 80% of children had predominant malignant immature cells (over 50%), only 13.3% of children had malignant immature cells in the marrow from 25-50%. Results after 4 weeks of attack, 100% of children survived, and complete response after attack treatment was 96%. Results after 6 years of treatment, the rate of children living over 5 years was 13.3%, the rate of children living from 1 month to 5 years was 63.4%, and the rate of children dying was 23.3%.
Conclusion: Mortality remains high, and complications of the disease, infection, and chemotherapy affect the length of hospital stay, treatment costs, and the psychology of the child and family.
