43. THE SITUATION OF TUBERCULOSIS/HIV CO-INFECTION AMONG TB PATIENTS IN VIETNAM DURING THE PERIOD 2017-2023

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the situation and trends of tuberculosis/HIV co-infection among tuberculosis patients nationwide during the period 2017-2023.

Subjects and methods: Tuberculosis patients detected and managed nationwide during the period 2017-2023. A retrospective descriptive study utilized secondary data from the reporting system of the National Tuberculosis Control Program. Data were analyzed using Excel and Stata software, applying Chi-square tests with a 95% confidence interval.

Results: From 2017 to 2023, among 702,024 tuberculosis patients, 595,166 (84.8%) were tested for HIV, with the testing rate increasing from 82.9% in 2017 to 87.7% in 2023 (p < 0.05). The HIV-positive rate decreased from 3.7% in 2017 to 2.6% in 2023 (p < 0.05). A reduction in the HIV-positive rate was observed in most regions, except for the South-Central Coast and Central Highlands (p > 0.05).

Conclusions: HIV testing among tuberculosis patients has significantly improved but has not yet met the 90% target. The decreasing HIV-positive rate indicates that tuberculosis/HIV co-infection is being effectively controlled. The National Tuberculosis Control Program needs to strengthen HIV testing in 37 provinces and cities with rates below 90%.
