Introduction: Strongyloidiasis is an infectious disease commonly found in tropical countries with humid climates, However, there are currently very few studies in Vietnam that evaluate the status of Strongyloides infection in healthcare facilities. Objectives: (1) Evaluate the prevalence of S. stercoralis infection at Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital; (2) Describe the clinical and paraclinical characteristics of patients infected with S. stercoralis.
Method: (1) Patients visiting the hospital for consultation and treatment are instructed to undergo ELISA serology to detect IgG antibodies against S. stercoralis, their information is collected from stored test records; (2) Inpatients at the hospital tested positive for S. stercoralis antibodies via ELISA serology, their information is collected from stored medical records. Result: (1) Out of 193 people, 65 (33.7%) tested positive for ELISA, primarily from Thua Thien Hue, commonly found in the working-age population, with no significant difference in disease rates between males and females. (2) Among 30 patients, the condition is most common in those over 60 years old, with a higher prevalence in males compared to females. Clinical manifestations are predominantly gastrointestinal, and 76.7% of patients have eosinophilia. Conclusion: Strongyloidiasis is a common disease in Vietnam; the clinical symptoms are diverse and nonspecific, primarily related to manifestations in the digestive system; a notable paraclinical test is eosinophilia.
