41. THE ROLE OF TRADITIONAL MEDICINE IN POST-STROKE REHABILITATION: A SCOPING REVIEW

Abstract

Objective: Overview of the role of traditional medicine in post-stroke rehabilitation in Vietnam.

Method: A scoping review searched for articles published on the data of the Ministry of Science and Technology within 10 years (2015-2024) in Vietnam related to the research objectives, according to the criteria PRISMA-ScR standard.

Results: Among 40 articles retrieved from the database, 19 articles met the selection criteria, most of which were clinical intervention studies, with before-and-after treatment comparisons and control groups (n = 18). The studies primarily utilized traditional formulas or products derived from these formulas (n = 2); non-pharmacological methods (n = 12); and combined pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods (n = 5). The effectiveness was evaluated in terms of improving motor functions and daily activities (n = 14), upper limb rehabilitation (n = 5), lower limb rehabilitation (n = 2), and pain reduction (n = 2); 5 studies exclusively used traditional medicine treatments.

Conclusions: Research on traditional medicine in post-stroke rehabilitation in Vietnam over the past 10 years indicates that traditional medicine plays an important role in the rehabilitation process, not only improving clinical symptoms but also contributing to enhancing the quality of life for post-stroke patients. However, studies on traditional medicine in post-stroke rehabilitation still have many limitations, particularly in the analysis of the specific mechanisms of action of the treatment methods.
