Objective: To analyze the association between tongue coating status and oral health diseases in elderly veterans in Him Lam ward, Dien Bien Phu city, Dien Bien province in 2024.
Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional study on 129 elderly veterans was conducted from April to June 2024. The decay - missing - filled index (DMFT), the oral hygiene index - simplified (OHI-S), the gingival index (GI), and the Winkel tongue coating index (WTCI) were the variables used in this study.
Results: The average age of the elderly veterans was 69.47 ± 0.78. The values were DMFT = 18.97 ± 6.67, GI = 1.91 ± 0.81, OHI-S = 4.36 ± 1.39, WTCI = 8.69 ± 2.71. The proportion of people with severe WTCI classification having DMFT values in the medium and high groups was 9.857 times higher than that of people with mild WTCI classification. The proportion of people with severe WTCI classification having GI values in the medium and heavy groups was 5.333 times higher than those with mild WTCI classification.
Conclusion: Severe tongue coating index increased the decayed - missing - filled teeth status and gingivitis status in patients.
