Introduction: Femoral shaft fractures are a common type of injury that can occur across all age groups, depending on the cause and mechanism of the trauma. Nowadays, most femoral shaft fractures are treated with internal fixation to ensure stable fracture fixation, allowing patients to mobilize early and achieve pre-injury functionality. Closed intramedullary nailing of the femur under C-arm fluoroscope has been applied for many years and has shown very good results.
Objective: To study the clinical and subclinical characteristics and to evaluate the outcomes of treating femoral shaft fractures using closed intramedullary nailing on a fracture table under C-arm fluoroscope at Nghe An Hospital for Traumatology and Orthopedics from 2021 to 2022.
Subjects and Methods: From January 2021 to December 2022, 112 patients with femoral shaft fractures were treated with closed intramedullary nailing on a fracture table under fluoroscopy.
Results: The average age was 34.95 ±14.17 years, with a male-to-female ratio of 3/2. The primary cause was traffic accidents, accounting for 66.9%. Clinically, the primary signs were swelling and deformity of the fractured thigh. According to AO/OTA classification, type A accounted for 46.4%, type B for 49.2%, and type C for 4.5%. Reduction results: excellent in 81.2%, good in 16.1%, and fair in 2.7%. Long-term outcomes: excellent in 88.3%, good in 9%, and fair in 1.8%. There was one case of nonunion. No cases of early or late infection were reported.
Conclusion: Intramedullary nailing on a fracture table offers many advantages: it nearly perfectly reduces intraoperative displacement and can be verified using C-arm fluoroscope, thus providing good treatment outcomes. This is a safe and effective method.
