Objective: Third molar extraction surgery is the most common surgery in dentistry. Most patients feel severe pain in the first 24 hours after surgery. Auricular acupuncture in Traditional Medicine has been proven to be effective in reducing pain in many surgeries. The study describes the clinical characteristics and pain levels after 2 hours in patients after third molar extraction surgery using auricular acupuncture method at the Department of Odonto-Stomatology.
Methods: Cross-sectional research design, combining quantitative and qualitative, surveying 60 patients at the Department of Odonto-Stomatology from December 2019 to July 2020.
Results: Research results on 60 patients with third molar extraction surgery at the Department of Odonto-Stomatology: The male/female ratio is 1:1.6. The average age is 22.82 ± 2.15 years. The ratio of teeth 38 is 48.33% and teeth 48 is 51.67%. 70% of third molar teeth are present in the mouth. Classification of lower third molar teeth according to Pell and Greory focuses mainly on groups IA, IIA and IC, 33.33%, 26.67%, 18.33% respectively. The average anesthesia time was 2.95 ± 0.75. The average surgery time was 11.81 ± 3.2. The average amount of anesthetic used (ml) was 3.19 ± 0.31. The average VAS score after 2 hours was 3.15 ± 1.61. 51.67% of patients had moderate to severe pain.
Conclusion: It is necessary to have a pain relief treatment plan after third molar extraction surgery using auricular acupuncture based on the clinical characteristics of the patient.
