Abstract

Objectives: To examine the link between refractive errors and strabismus at HCM Eye hospital from 2017-2018, thereby determining the effectiveness of refractive errors pre and post-correction to the change of strabismus.

Methods: A retrospective cross – sectional study collected on 589 children from 1 month of birth to 23 years old at Strabismus department at the Eye hospital from 2017 – 2018.

Results: Results showed that exotropia cases show 38% in having refractive error; esotropia cases ratio in hyperopia is high, up to 53%. In Exotropia, the average prism diopter is 28,14 ± 9,22Δ before refraction, decreasing to 25,96 ± 13,16Δ after; distance tropia prism diopter before refraction is 29,66 ± 10,18Δ, decreasing to 26,27 ± 13,56Δ after (p < 0,0001). In esotropia, near tropia has the average prism diopter of 26,24 ± 9,66Δ before refraction, decreasing to 18,48 ± 16,72Δ after. Distance tropia before refraction has the average value of 27,3 ± 9,72Δ, decreasing to 18,48 ± 16,72Δ after (p < 0,0001).

Conclusion: Refractive errors have a close relationship with horizontal tropia, and appropriate treatment for refractive errors can improve the level of deviation on horizontal tropia.
