Abstract

Objective: Describe the clinical and paraclinical characteristics of stillbirths from 22 weeks or more at Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital.

Research subjects and methods: Retrospective review of over 100 pregnant women with stillbirths aged 22 weeks or older using pre-designed research records at Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital from January 1st, 2023 to December, 31st 2023.

Results: The average age of the study subjects was 29.6 ± 5.5 years old and was most common in the age group 25-29 (40%). 37% of pregnant women were pregnant for the first time, 81% of pregnant women had never had a miscarriage or abortion, 12% of pregnant women had 1 stillbirth and 1% had 2 or more stillbirths. The average age of a stillborn fetus is 30.1 ± 4.9 weeks, the rate of gestational age in the 28-35 week group is 47%. 68% of pregnant women discovered the stillbirth in the uterus when they saw loss of fetal movement, 22% came to the doctor because of abdominal pain, 17% due to vaginal bleeding, 10% discovered it during a routine prenatal check-up. There are 2% of fetuses with polyhydramnios and 6% of fetuses with oligohydramnios; the majority have normal placenta, only 5% have placental edema. The proportion of pregnant women with low hemoglobin levels is 26%.

Conclusion: Stillbirth is common in the preterm gestational age group and is often detected due to abdominal pain and loss of fetal movement.
