19. COMPLETE BLOOD COUNT ALTERATIONS IN DENGUE HEMORRHAGE FEVER PATIENTS AT BACH MAI HOSPITAL IN 2023

Abstract

Objective: This study aim to describe changes in the hematological parameters in dengue hemorrhage fever (DHF) inpatients at Bach Mai hospital in 2023.

Subject and method: A retrospective cross-sectional study on 234 complete blood count (CBC) of 234 patients diagnosed with dengue hemorrhage fever and treated at Bach Mai hospital in 2023. The exclusion criteria were the patients with medical conditions accompanying infection or other hematological diseases.

Results: DHF was observed in both male and female, the ratio is higher in male (59.0%). This disease occurs in all ages with the highest number in the working- age group (16-59 years old). The number of RBC and WBC was mainly normal or reduced ( 73.1% and 97.9% respectively). Cases with increased WBC numbers related to severe infections in dengue shock syndrome (DSS) patients, it were significantly different from the DHF- group (p < 0.001). Hct > 0.47 L/L increases the risk of death in DHF. The number of PLT was decreased in the majority of cases (93.7%). A dramatically decrease in the DHF- group with DHF within warning sign- group (35.14±6.38 G/L) and DSS (41.33±11.98 G/L), corresponding to clinical bleedingcharacteristics.

Conclusion: The number of WBC and RBC is mostly normal or reduced. Increased WBC cases were associated with severe infection in patients in DSS group. Decreased PLT number and increased HCT are two important prognostic factors in DHF disease.
