Abstract

Objective: The aim of our study was to describe the nutritional status of children with recurrent pneumonia and evaluating factors associated with malnutrition and the relationship between nutritional status and disease severity.

Subjects and methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 202 pediatric patients aged from 2 to 60 months diagnosed with recurrent pneumonia at the Respiratory Department, Hanoi Children’s Hospital, from April 2025 to April 2026.

Results: The median age of the children was 16 months; children aged 2 to 23 months accounted for the largest proportion of admissions at 73.7%, with a male-to-female ratio of 1.32/1. The rates of underweight, stunting, and wasting were 27.6%, 49.0%, and 30.7%, respectively. Preterm birth (< 37 weeks of gestation) and low birth weight (< 2500 gr) were significantly associated with underweight and wasting. There was no significant difference in pneumonia severity observed among the malnutrition groups.

Conclusion: The study results highlight the need for routine nutritional status assessment upon hospital admission for children with recurrent pneumonia.
